Nice catch Bowtie. Have never owned a pair, they don't seem horrible from this conversation..for a first time Altec buyer a c note ain't bad...and the one fellows idea of rears in a surround setup bears merit..

Thanks OG, i've never heard them either. I have 891's, which i think are about the same thing minus the passive, pretty darn good for what they are.

I agree AB, i think 886 and 893 were offered as economical alternatives to the Madera and Bolero. Bolero is a significant step up from the 886. Especially the "C" version with it's full classic 3 inch Altec motor and trademark effortless bass/mid sonic signature. The 886's and 893's are good, no question. The Madera and Bolero are just better on an altogether level higher.Originally Posted by Altec Best
I mistyped in my above post, i have 893 Coronas(confuse them with 891's) that use the same (30684) woofer as the 886. In fact, the 893 is to the 886 almost exactly what the Madera is to the Bolero. Essentially "sister" speaker systems in either a passive radiator or acoustic suspension alignment.
